Why Visit Folegandros?
Escape the crowds of Santorini with a 50-minute ferry ride to Folegandros, a hidden gem of the Cyclades. With no airport and just one main road, it’s the perfect destination to relax, unwind, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. At the heart of Hora, the island’s enchanting main town, you’ll find the 12th-century Venetian Kastro, a fascinating historical landmark. Within the Kastro lies the Cliffhouse, a unique spot with an incredible location and stunning views. Surrounded by charming whitewashed houses and breathtaking sea vistas, Hora also offers a variety of delightful open-air dining options that make every meal unforgettable.

Beyond the town, Folegandros boasts a rugged coastline with crystal-clear turquoise waters and hidden coves. In summer, be sure to take a boat trip around the island to discover Folegandros at its most magical.

Exploring the Beaches of Folegandros

Folegandros offers a truly natural beach experience, as there are no organized beaches with sunbeds or umbrellas. This means you should pack your own umbrella for shade. The only beach with natural shade is Agios Nikolaos, thanks to its trees. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the island’s beaches:

Agios Nikolaos Beach

Agios Nikolaos is a charming, small beach offering shade from the trees and a relaxed atmosphere. There’s also a taverna right on the beach, as well as Pappagalli, a second taverna located slightly uphill, offering a great spot to sit and enjoy the view (you can see it from the beach).

  • Getting There: You can reach Agios Nikolaos by taking a short, 15-minute walk from Agali Beach along a clear path on the right side of the beach. Alternatively, during high season, small boats run between Agali and Agios Nikolaos. However, in low season, boat services can be unpredictable, making the scenic hike a better option.

Agali Beach

Agali is one of the island’s main beaches and is easily accessible by bus from Chora. It features a few tavernas and small beach bars:

  • Ammoudaki Café: Located on the left side as you arrive, this café is perfect for juices, sandwiches, and snacks. Margarita and Dionisis, the friendly owners, are happy to share tips—just mention you’re a friend of Irina!
  • Psaromiligkas Taverna: Perched slightly uphill on the right side of the beach, this taverna is run by Mrs. Dina, who serves delicious meals made with fresh ingredients from her own garden.

Katergo Beach

A favorite among many visitors, Katergo Beach boasts stunning waters but no shade or facilities, so be sure to bring water, snacks, and an adventurous spirit!

  • Getting There: You can take a boat from Karavostasi (the main port), which will drop you off and pick you up later. Alternatively, hikers can follow a trail from Livadi. The one-hour walk is slightly challenging, particularly when descending to the beach, so sturdy shoes and a love for discovery are essential.

Fira Beach

For a scenic adventure, take the old stone path to Fira Beach, passing by Christos Church along the way. It’s a lovely walk for those who enjoy exploring on foot.

Beaches Near the Harbor

Around Karavostasi, the island’s port, there are several smaller beaches like Vardia and Vitsentzou, which are easily accessible without much walking.

Island Boat Tours

To discover Folegandros’ many hidden coves and beaches, consider booking an island tour. These trips often run a few times a week and can be arranged through Diplous Travel, a small travel agency located at the entrance of Chora.

Folegandros’ beaches promise pristine beauty and tranquility, making them perfect for travelers who value unspoiled nature and peaceful surroundings.
